Anne H. Smith
Town Councilwoman
Anne H. Smith is an educator, community leader, and public servant who has devoted her career to the people of Southold Town. She and her husband Ron have lived in Mattituck for more than forty years, where they raised their three children.
Anne's professional life was defined by public education and a deep commitment to young people. She began her career as a teacher and assistant principal in the Rocky Point School District, then served as principal in the William Floyd School District before joining the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District in 1996 as principal of Cutchogue East Elementary School. After eighteen years leading that school, she became Assistant Superintendent and ultimately Superintendent of Schools, a role she held from 2014 to 2018. She holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Accountability from St. John's University, and has taught graduate courses for aspiring school leaders.
Since retiring from education, Anne has remained deeply engaged in the civic life of Southold Town. She consulted for the Mattituck-Cutchogue School District, chaired the North Fork Coalition for Behavioral Health advocating for local mental health services, served as president of the Mattituck-Laurel Civic Association, sat on the Southold Town Police Review Task Force, chaired a panel on affordable housing, and worked with North Fork Civics on house size code reform. In 2017 she was honored with the Helen Wright Prince Award by the Southold Town Anti-Bias Task Force.
Elected to the Town Board in November 2023, Anne is a committed advocate for responsive government, community wellness, affordable housing, and the protection of Southold's environment and quality of life.
