How do I become a Committee Member?

Democratic Committee Members are also known as Democratic Election District Leaders.

WE WELCOME YOU
A Committee Member/ED Leader is the grassroots representative of the Democratic party in your area. They are your neighbors and serve as a resource for Democratic and general voter information. Committee Members/ ED Leaders are committed to getting Democrats elected to office at all levels and promoting Democratic values:

Their main duties are:

  • Attending Monthly Committee Meetings

  • Petitioning – collecting signatures to get
    Democrats on the ballot.

  • Canvassing  - visiting Democratic voters in your district during campaigns.

  • Phone Banking  - reaching out to other voters to inform them

  • Letter/Postcard Writing – in support of Democrats and/or Democratic issues

  • Campaign and Fundraising Events - help at various events

  • Working at Campaign HQ - during local elections

  • Get Out The Vote - before and during Early Voting and on Election Day

Currently, there are open seats on the Southold Town Demoratic Committee, and the Committee Chair can appoint individuals to fill these roles now. If you are interested, please email us at info@southolddems.org.

While the Committee Chair can appoint a new member, this is an “elected” position. Every two years committee members are formally “elected” to their positions by collecting petition signatures from registered Democrats in your election district. Signatures are collected at the same time we collect signatures to put candidates on the ballot for that year. The STDC will distribute petitions to interested registered Democrats.

To be a Southold Town Democratic Committee (STDC) Member, aka Election District Leader, you must be a registered Democrat who is eligible to vote as a Democrat in Southold Town. However, you do not need to live in the Southold Town Election District where you are a committee member. Members of the STDC are elected (or appointed) bi-annually for a term of two years.
